2016 Völkl World Rookie Finals: New Champions Crowned!

The 11th edition of the Völkl World Rookie Final just crowned the best overall boy and girl at the Ischgl Snowpark. This year, the weather conditions did not help both riders and organizers, in fact after the first sunny day of qualification for rookie and grom boys, the qualification for the girls had to be cancelled. The final day was also postponed and it took place on Sunday, the 10th of April, when finally the sun came out again and gave the possibility to the both male and female riders to show their skills and their talent in the Ischgl Snowpark. In the final, 32 best overall boys and all the registered girls, that did not have the possibility to do the qualification day, showed an incredible level of riding with solid tricks in the two final runs.

wrf1

Enna Ikola from Finland, took the first place in the rookie category with a backside 360 melon on the first jump, frontside 360 fs grab on the second one, frontside air tailgrab on the spine and finishing up with a lipslide on the jib section. The finnish rider showed a nice and clean run, but at the end, the 12 years old, Kokomo Murase from Japan won not only in the grom category, but also the best overall girl of the Völkl World Rookie Final. The young Japanese destroyed the snowpark with backside 360 tailgrab and frontside 720 on the jumps, followed by a frontside air to fakie and a cab 180 to boardslide on the jib obstable.

After the girls final, it was time for the boys. The best 32 overall boys showed an incredible level of riding and at the end the champion was crowned. Isak Ulstein is the 2016 Völkl World Rookie Champion thanks to an incredible run consisting of a frontside 1080 fs grab and a backside 1080 mute on the jumps, a backside rodeo 540 tailgrab on the spine and 270 to boardaslide 270 out on the jib section. In the grom category, the level was pretty impressive, considering that the first grom ended up 4th in the overall ranking and the name of this future pro is Takeru Otsuka from Japan that performed a cab double cork 900 mute on the first kicker, a backside double cork 1080 mute, followed by a beautiful michalchuck melon transfer on the spine and concluding with a backside 270 boardslide on the final obstacle.

Finals postponed to Sunday 10th April at the Völkl World Rookie Finals

Bad weather and fog seems to follow the Völkl World Rookie Finals this year. After the cancelled qualification for the girls yesterday, the organization committee was forced to postpone the finals both for boys and girls to Sunday 10th April. After a lot of fog in the morning, it seemed to clear out a little bit and to give the possibility to the girls to ride, but at the end the fog came back and both rookies and groms went back to Ischgl for a relaxing afternoon, getting ready for the big day of tomorrow.

Day 3 at the Völkl World Rookie Finals

Due to the bad weather condition and the fog, the organization had to cancel the qualification for the rookie girls and the grom girls. The young female riders were motivated and showed that they can have fun also if the visibility is pretty bad. After a session on the jibbing area, they found some plastic mats and everybody had a lot of fun sliding down in the snowpark, even down the spine!

160408_WRF_2016_photo_by_Gustav_Ohlsson_highres_

In the afternoon, the riders had the possibility to have a unique experience during the two scheduled workshops. First, rookies and groms had the chance to build a longboard from old snowboards thanks to Ruffboards (more info at www.ruffboards.com), a passionate group of people in collaboration with ex-prisoners from Wien, Austria. They design, produce and sell worldwide their hand-made longboards.

Later in the day, Viva con Agua explained to the rookies and to the groms the importance of water and the problems that some countries have in finding clear and drinkable water.

Qualification Day 1 at the Völkl World Rookie Finals

The first qualification day went down today despite the not so good weather forecast. The day began with the parade from the Silvretta Center to the Ischgl cable car with all the teams holding their national flags.

Then the action started up in the snowpark, where the rookie boys and the grom boys battled for a spot in the big final on Saturday, 9th April. The sun was shining almost all day long and gave to the riders the possibility to execute two runs, the best one counts for the final rank.

45 rookie boys opened up the show, Yutaro Miyazawa, from Japan, destroyed the park with a beautiful run consisting of a frontside double cork 1080 melon on the first kicker, a backside double 1080 indy on the second one, a backside invert transfer on the spine and finishing on the jib section with a backside 270 out.

Among the 31 grom boys, Takeru Otsuka, from Japan, impressed the judges with a perfect Cab double 900 mute on the first jump, backside double cork mute on the second one, backside 360 transfer mute on the spine and concluding with a libstick bonk.

For the final on Saturday, the best 32 boys overall are qualified and they will challenge themselves to become the 2016 World Rookie Champion!

What went down
January 21-24, 2016 => The ArcroBag Team decided to put on an event which acts as a stepping stone to professional SnowBoardom:

ABOUT THE WORLD SNOWBOARD FEDERATION

The World Snowboard Federation (WSF) is the international organization exclusively working to develop the sport of snowboarding at all levels. The WSF collaborates with the TTR Pro Snowboarding, the owner and operator of the TTR World Snowboard Tour and the TTR World Ranking System. Through this collaboration and coordination of events at the TTR World Snowboard Tour, The WSF and the TTR want to create an environment that fosters the development of competitive snowboarding. In February 2012, the WSF and the TTR hosted the inaugural World Snowboarding Championships in Oslo, Norway, an elite level event to be held every four years in alternating cities around the world. The sun over the perfectly shaped black line in the Oslo Vinterpark was giving it all – and so did 75 young snowboarders at the Oslo Rookie Fest 2016 from 26th to 28th of February. Enjoy the video of 2016 Oslo Rookie Fest!

Oslo Rookie Fest 2016 from MOON on Vimeo.

The Black Yeti’s first ever slopestyle stop in the Norwegian capital was highly awaited – Norway has been one of the most represented countries in the World Rookie Tour the past few years. During the NATIONAL level World Snowboard Tour contest on past Saturday, Rookies stemming from eight different countries proved their Black Yeti skills showcasing massive tricks. Norwegian rider Isak Ulstein left the greatest impression on slopestyle course. Best girl became Rookie Emmi Parkkisenniemi from Finland. Isak and Emmi brought home full-paid tickets for the pinnacle event of the World Rookie Tour – the 2016 Volkl World Rookie Finals in Ischgl, April 2016, snowboards from Sims and Never Summer and of course the famous Black Yeti trophies. Parallel to the Oslo Rookie Fest, the X Games Oslo were going down in the World Winter Capital. After practice and competition, the Rookies watched the best riders of the world competing in the X Games Oslo Finals in Halfpipe and Big Air.
Several athletes of the X Games Oslo have previously competed in the World Rookie Tour, which is providing the unique chance to help the next generation of pro snowboarders to experience their first dives into international contests and develop their competition skills. Besides exercising and watching high level riding, the Rookies enjoyed a snowskate session with the local Asker Snowboard and Freestyle Club pushing the Rookies skateskills on snow.
