Lisa Wiik takes Swatch TTR Tour lead at Burton canadian Open

The 5Star Burton Canadian Open in Calgary, Alberta came to a close with the slopestyle finals at the Winsport Canada Olympic Park this Sunday. It was two young guns who took the titles and put on an amazing show despite the difficult foggy conditions. 19-year old Enni Rukajarvi from Finland took her fourth TTR title this season and 17-year old Brett Esser (USA) dominated the men’s finals, both awarded with 850 TTR ranking points. Lisa Wiik (NOR) was the TTR star of weekend with her second place finish in slopestyle combined with her fifth place finish in Saturday’s halfpipe finals pushing her ahead of Sarka Pancochova (CZE) taking the Swatch TTR Tour lead.

Rukajarvi is on a Roll in 2010
The women’s final on the slopestyle course saw Rukajarvi repeat her incredible success from the 6Star Burton European Open only a few weeks back. Her winning run consisted of a Cab-on to boardslide, gap 50/50, frontside 360, 50/50 on the downrail, 50/50 to indy along the wallride, a smooth frontside 360 tailgrab, backside 540 indy and a Cab 720 mute. With this result she has now moved into Swatch TTR World No.4 and is enthusiastic about her result “Im happy about the TTR Top 5 and my next competitions will be the US Open and the Roxy Chicken Jam.”

The Chase for the 2009/2010 Women’s TTR Title is Hot
Lisa Wiik, who in 2008/2009 finished her season in TTR World No 2, was able to pull out some solid results at the Canadian Open to put her into the TTR top spot. Claiming two strong 5Star results, she displayed her experience to cope with tough conditions and strong competition both in the halfpipe and on the slopestyle course. However, her lead over Pancochova is only by a few points and with with Sina Candrian (SUI) only a few points behind after her 3rd place finish in slopestyle, there is going to be some heavy competition when the TTR Tour comes back online following the Olympics.

American Brett Esser Takes His First Major Tour Title
On the men’s side, Brett Esser took his first major title today and stomped an incredibly stylish run which included a switch back 900 mute, backside 720 tail grab over the channel jump and a frontside 1080 tailgrab. He had some tough competition from the Canadian, Jon Versteeg, who took second place and Robby Balharry who landed in third.

Grilc Makes Some Moves to Return to the TTR Top 3
Marko Grilc’s (SLO) 12th place was enough to push him back up into Swatch TTR World No 3, right in front of Markus Malin (FIN). Slowly climbing the ranks into World No. 15 is Roope Tonteri, who has been on a roll since his World Rookie Champion title in 2009. He took 6th place today and was the top qualifier in the semi-finals.

Up Next on the Swatch TTR World Tour
The next big TTR event for the men is the 5Star Burn River Jump in Livigno, Italy taking place the 24th-26th of February, and then the tour will move on to Norway for the 6Star Arctic Challenge, which was postponed to March due to lack of snow earlier in the season.

World Rookie Fest in Livigno Kicks off

The first day of the Protest World Rookie Fest started with a bluebird sky but at the time the training started visibility got bad, but none of the 100 rookies quit riding the well shaped slopestyle courses in the Swatch Mottolino Snowpark.

The 100 kids coming from more than 15 nations from all over the world spent the all day at the well known Swatch Mottolino Snowpark: the M course were the perfect line for girls (4 kickers in line) and the L course was the most wanted for the boys (pole jam and 4 kickers from 4 to 16 meters). Kids will compete for great prizes such as a wildcard to the 6 Star Oakley Arctic Challenge 2010 in Norway, the cornerstone event of the TTR World Snowboard Tour and a freeride trip to Chile together with international pros and a professional film production company.

Protest World Rookie Fest is the first carbon neutral snowboard event in Italy and the first carbon neutral Rookie event ever. Certified by ClimatePartner, Rookie Fest has teamed up with a project for Renewable Energy from Wood Biomass based in Tirano, a few kilometers from Livigno. Today, Monday 18th, World Rookie Fest will start officially with the first day of qualification.

World Rookie Fest Partnered with TAC and became Carbon Neutral

100 rookies, including World Rookie Champion 2009 Roope Tonteri from Finland, are next to land in Livigno, Italy, for the 3Star Protest World Rookie Fest. A new incredible prize has just been announced, as the winner will get a wildcard to the legendary 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge 2010 in Norway. In addition to the competitive aspects, the event has set itself a mission to become the first carbon neutral youth snowboarding event.

Standing behind the slogan “The Future is Here”, the Protest World Rookie Fest 2010 announced a few new points to promote this concept. The best rookies from all over the world will compete for prizes which will help them with their careers as future stars of snowboarding: such as a wildcard to the 6 Star Oakley Arctic Challenge 2010 in Norway, the cornerstone event of the TTR World Snowboard Tour, founded by Terje Haakonsen or a freeride trip to Chile together with international pros and a professional a film production company. There will also be 5 invitations handed out to the 4Star Protest World Rookie Finals 2010 in Ischgl, Austria and, for the female partecipants, 2 tickets for the 3Star Oakley Girl Session in Finland. Finally snowboard goodies offered by Protest Boardwear and Ride Snowboards.

World Rookie Champion 2009 Roope Tonteri at Protest WRF 09 in Livigno

To express our respect for the surrounding nature, the Protest World Rookie Fest has teamed up with a project for Renewable Energy from Wood Biomass based in Tirano, a few kilometers from Livigno. This energetic project uses surplus biomass residues to generate electricity for 500 houses, avoiding the use of 3.5 million liters of gasoline and 10.500 tons of CO2 per year. Also this project pushes traditional agricultural activities and mountain forest maintenance in the same area where the event happens. In this way the event offsets locally the CO2 emissions generated and reaches the status of a Carbon Neutral Event, certified by Climate Partner. To be mentioned that The Arctic Challenge 2009 was the first snowboard event ever to be Carbon Neutral.

Almost 100 rookies from 15 countries already confirmed their presence at the event. They will be split into two categories: Rookies, those who were born between 1st January 1992 and 31st December 1994, and Groms, who were born after January 1st, 1995. Both male and female categories. Past edition saw today’s big names on the podium such as Staale Sandbach, Seppe Smith, Gjermund Braathen, Sarka Pancochova, Dimi De Jong which have builded today a carrier as professional snowboarders. Stay tuned and check the rider list of 2010 edition: among today’s unknowns there are future stars of snowboarding.

ABOUT THE SWATCH TTR WORLD SNOWBOARD TOUR
Founded by Terje Haakonsen and industry innovators in 2002, the Swatch Ticket To Ride (TTR) World Snowboard Tour is a non-profit, rider-driven organization with the mission “to create the highest quality competitive snowboard environment in the world, using authenticity, accessibility, innovation as guiding principles”. Since its foundation, the Swatch TTR Tour has been developing into the most exposed snowboard tour worldwide featuring global grass root and key independent freestyle snowboarding events over a ten-month period from Southern to Northern Hemisphere locations. Events are rated via a 1-through-6Star system, with points allocated accordingly, a 6Star event holds the highest (1000 points). Any rider participating in these events, from up-and-coming to professional talent, earns ranking points and a position on the Swatch TTR World Ranking List. The top male and female rider based on an average of their best six results of the season (5+1 system) is crowned Swatch TTR World Snowboard Champion. Fresh Rookie Talent Enni Rukajarvi take sthe title at the 6Star Roxy Chicken Jam

Today saw the second 6Star event for the women of the 09/10 Swatch TTR Tour season, the Roxy Chicken Jam. The level was incredibly high at the Nightpark in Saalbach- Hinterglemm and the judges had a tight decision to make when it came down to the super finals. It was 19 year old Enni Rukajärvi from Finland who emerged as the winner leaving Cheryl Maas (NED) in second and Kjersti Ostgaard Buaas (NOR) in third.

Rookie Talent Enni Rukajärvi
Enni Rukajärvi has had a glorious early season with her win at the 4Star
Horsefeathers Pleasure Jam to now taking the coveted title at 6Star Roxy
Chicken Jam. Jumping up into World No.14, she is plowing her way up the
Swatch TTR ranking. Enni’s trademark is her textbook technique, which she
displayed in her winning run consisting of a 50/50 on the top rail, a stylish
frontside 3 tail grab, backside 540 indy grab, Cab 540 and 50/50 nose press.
Today Enni was beaming with smiles; “Feels great, I am really surprised, I had
no idea this would happen. The level was really high…I just tried to do my best.
From here I go to the European Open and lets see how that goes.“

Shaking up the TTR TOP5
Sitting in TTR World No. 2, the top spot is only a few points away for Cheryl
Maas who showed her solid talent and stomped the best trick of the day, a lofty
backside 720 tail, one of her signature tricks. When asked about her aspirations
to become a two-time Swatch TTR Champion she says it would be “awesome”
but hesitates: “There are still so many comps to be done…there are a lot of
people hunting for that spot“. Sarka Pancochova (CZE), remains in World No. 1
after today’s 4th place and will certainly not give her top spot away without a fight.

With a 5th place finish today and a 2nd place in the Halfpipe at 6Star O’Neill
Evolution 2010 in Davos, Sina Candrian (SUI) now moves into Swatch TTR
World No. 3 just in front of newcomer talent and second in this weeks O’Neill
Evolution Cilka Sadar (SLO). Both Kjersti and her fellow Norwegian Lisa Wiik are
climbing up the ranks with Kjersti now in the World No. 8 and Lisa in World No.5.

France’s Only 3 star TTR event steps up

Back of the success of last year’s Tricks or Treat 1 star TTR contest that took place in Avoriaz, King of Frostown falls as the second in the series of contests dedicated to snowboarding.Scheduled over a weekend, this sporting event will be open to confirmed amateurs on Saturday while the Pro riders will compete on Sunday, both rookies and adults.

Limited to forty participants a day, registrations on internet will close two weeks before the event. On the Sunday an invitational event will take place, restricted to selected pro riders. This Slopestyle event will take place at Val Thorens snowpark, shaped by the skilled local crew. The Tourist Office is supporting the project and committed to helping with logistical needs. The saga of Tricks or Treat contests has been created in order to take the world of snowboarding to the next level. It’s a matter of principle for its organizers to build a progressive course for the future figures of this sport.

With the vision: “To perpetuate the strength of professional snowboarding by instilling youths with team spirit, friendship between riders and mutual help during competitions. These are the reasons why we are opening the contest to amateurs / semi-pros on Saturday: raising new comers to the top of the podium, finding the talented youths that will make the strength of tomorrow’s snowboarding and incorporating amateurs to the TTR in order to guide their professional career”.

ABOUT THE CLINIC
It is important to build a park that meets both the needs and riding level of your customers. Black, red or blue park? Black, red or blue park lines? Regardless of the Park level you are intending on building, the clinic will provide you with information on how small and large parks are built and maintained.

Pratical parts will be held in the Swatch Mottolino Snowpark in Livigno during the last days of construction of the slopestyle for the Protest World Rookie Fest 2010 (to stay more and assist at the event contact rookie@worldsnowboardfederation.org)

How to Get a Ticket to Ride the Air&Style

Innsbruck, Austria – December 3rd, 2009: At large inner-city events on the Swatch TTR Tour a spot on the start list is a prized commodity as it guarantees a rider the chance to enter the snowboarding book of fame. You might have asked yourself, “How does one get a ticket to compete at an event of such epic proportions as the 6Star Billabong Air &Style in Innsbruck?” Well here’s one way to get yourself on the riders list: The Air & Style Rookie Challenge.

Some of the riders competing in the main event this year made their way to the invite list through winning the Rookie Challenge in the past including the 2006 winner Mikkel Bang (NOR) who went on to take second place in the 2007 6Star Nokia Air & Style. The 2007 Rookie Challenge winner, Tim Humphreys (USA), is another example and will be joining the line up at the main event this year thanks to his win in the past.

This time around, the winner of the Air & Style Rookie Challenge will be rushed straight back to the top to compete in the main event and there are 12 eager newcomers fighting for that top spot.

Young Norwegian, Gjermund Braaten, began collecting podium finishes at local events and found his way to the international event scene by taking the win at the 3Star Völkl Rookie Fest Final 2008. This win at the Rookie Fest also gave him a wild card to the Air & Style 2009 Rookie Challenge.

Many other rising stars will be competing at the Rookie Challenge such as Seppe Smits (BEL) who has also been riding well on the World Rookie Tour. He has only been competing on the Swatch TTR tour for a few years and last season we saw his solid nerves in the “head to head” format 6Star O’Neill Evolution Slopestyle where he took second place and finished the year in TTR World No 38.

The Rookie Challenge will take place early on Saturday 17:00 as a jam session with two judged runs for each rider, with the best result counting. One lucky rider will qualify to ride in the main contest of the 6Star Billabong Air & Style at 20:30 CET against the likes of current Swatch TTR World No. 1, Sebastien Toutant (CAN), and 08/09 Swatch TTR World Champion Peetu Piiroinen (FIN). Don’t miss out on any of the action and come to the Bergisel Stadium or watch the live Webcast on www.ttrworldtour.com.
