British Snow Tour Heads Indoors for some High Speed Action

The British Snow Tour made its first indoor stop of the series on Sunday 19th September at Glasgow SNO!zone for the Trespass Snowboard/Skiercross Championships and Rail Jam. The competition was fierce as over 100 of the UK’s top riders destroyed the rail set-up and charged down the fast Snowboard/Skiercross course. The Schools Tour Team also proved to be a big hit in Glasgow with over 100 enthusiastic kids taking part in the FREE taster lessons, courtesy of the Trespass Learner Academy.

Trespass Snowboardcross Championships and Rail Jam
A fast and pristine course welcomed in the first snowboard event of the day – The Trespass British Snowboardcross Championships. Over 50 riders including Team GB members battled it out during the head-to-head qualifying heats with the hopes of making it through to the overall finals.

It was a close race during the Women’s final with cousins Katie Ormerod and Sophie Nicholls both getting a great start out of the gates and battling it out to take the lead. Sophie accelerated over the last set of rollers to cross the line in first place and take the 2010 Trespass British Snowboardcross Championship title. Katie finished in a very close second with Sarah Fish and 2009 champ, Jules Chappell finishing in 3rd and 4th respectively.

In the Men’s final it was another close race out of the start gates with some spectacular wipe-outs along the way. Team GB rider, Simon Nicholson, who’d clocked the fastest timed run of the day took an early lead, but crashed out on a banked turn, leaving the race wide open. Local rider, Marco Santi took full advantage and charged down the course and over the final jump to take the 2010 Trespass Snowboardcross Championship Title. Second place and a thwack of respect went to Edward Castle-Henry who crossed the line next and who’d also spent 17hrs on a coach traveling up to Scotland to compete. Kyle Wise and Simon Nicholson, who’d dominated the qualification rounds finished in 3rd and 4th respectively

The relaxed rail jam, with its array of obstacles – from rookie boxes and gas pipes to more challenging rails and c-box’s continued the afternoon’s snowboard action. The rail trickery was in a league of its own with Jamie Nicholls and local riders pushing the limits. After a 2hr session Jamie Nicholls (over 16’s) Matt McCormick (under 16’s) and Katie Ormerod (women) walked away as the overall Jam session winners. A special shout-out also goes to local ripper, JJ who was killing it on the box with one footed boardslides.

Billy Hayman wins Australian Rookie Fest in Thredbo

Fifteen-year-old Billy Hayman is the debut champion of the Australian Rookie Fest in Thredbo thanks to a sick run that included some stylish front and back 720s with a myriad of jib tricks to match. Next week will take place the South America Rookie Fest in Valle Nevado, Chile, as the last stop for the Southern Hemisphere for the World Rookie Tour 2010.

About the Australia Rookie Fest, despite an unseasonal downpour of rain the day prior, Thredbo’s terrain park crew soldiered on to tirelessly put together a stellar looking slopestyle course. The set up included a 30 stair set complete with both round and flat bar options into a 6 metre box to cliff drop landing. Next was the jump line consisting of a 35ft jump into a 40 ft jump to finish. With the smooth take offs and landings, 540’s and 720’s quickly became the standard tricks of the top 5 riders in the finals.

Thursday’s rainfall meant the cancellation of the planned air bag session and practice on the slopestyle course. But not ones to let a bit of bad weather sour their moods, the kids remained high-spirited and confident they’d get to shred on the planned competition day on Friday.

Rookie Girl Podium

The weather co-operated on Friday as the judges, including Australian Olympic halfpipe rider Ben Mates, witnessed some of the best qualification runs ever seen in an Australian junior competition. In what was a difficult field of riders to split, the male rookie group was narrowed down to a five rider final. Billy Hayman’s run of front board down the staircase, back tail to same way 270 off the cliff box into a frontside 720 mute and then backed up by a backside 720 Japan was enough to earn him the nod from Jesse Kennedy and Hugh Marsden.

Male Grom Podium

In the female rookie division Lauren Staveley’s combination of 50-50s with back and front 360s earned her the win. While in the grom division, Henry Bessell impressed with a winning run of 50-50 down the staircase into another 50-50 to backside 180 out off the cliff box, followed by a cab 540 into a backside 360. Billy, Henry and Lauren all secured themselves an all-inclusive entro to the Livigno World Rookie Fest in Italy and maybe the World Rookie Finals in Ischgl, Austria in the hope of securing the title of World Rookie Champion, an accolade once captured by Australia’s own Michaela Davis Meehan in 2009. The prize includes registration, accomodation, meals and lift tickets, while Male and Female rookie winners also won a ride in the Red Bull stunt plane.

Male Rookie Podium

Matthias Vogt and Christian Beri are the Quiksilver Wir Schanzen Champions 2010

They came, saw and stepped on it!At the Big Final of the Quiksilver Wir Schanzen 2010 with bright sunshine in the perfectly shaped Betterpark Hintertux 49 Freeskiers and Snowboarders showed why it was them who qualified for this final. It really was Freestyle Action on the highest stage.

For many riders the Big Final of the Quiksilver Wir Schanzen 2010 was the last contest of the season, but the smiling faces at the accreditation already showed that there was a lot of motivation left to step on it one more time.
The organizers chose the Jam-Session Modus so the riders could make as many runs as a preset time period allowed. And it was the right decision: the riders pushed each other from run to run to a top class riding level.

The Kids and Girls went first on the Medium Kickers and Jib Line. Mini but mighty! The Kids made everybody sit up. In the end it was Lucas Mangold (GER) to win the skiing category and Christian Geiger (AUT) took the snowboard victory. The rookies have been awarded with summer season tickets for the Hintertux Glacier worth more than 500 Euro each. For 222 days the Betterpark Hintertux as the only summer snowpark of Central Europe will now be second home.

And the supposedly weaker sex showed that girls as well do not shrink from challenging tricks. Local heroine Christina Gruber (AUT) nailed down the victory in the snowboard category with the best action in this class and could take home two tickets for the Taubertal Festival. At her second contest the ski girl Lisa Zimmermann (GER) astonished spectators as well as judges with her 720s and one 1080. She too could hold two Festival tickets of Red Bull in her hands – on top of the podium.

The big showdown came in the superfinals of the Men. The riders could not get enough and the tricks became faster, higher and further from run to run. With double flips and his smooth style Christian Beri (SUI) could convince the judges. In the snowboard category it was Matthias Vogt (AUT) who won with creativity, challenging tricks and a lot of style. Both champions took home a cheque worth 1000 Euros from the title sponsor Quiksilver.

At the last Red Bull Best Trick Session of this year’s tour the challenge was to overcome an Up-Box with a Gap. Again Matthias Vogt (AUT) wrapped this session up with a switch 50-50 Backflip out. Raphael Schweiger (AUT) showed the best skiing trick and took home the Red Bull IPod Touch. For those who cannot get enough of kickers, boxes and co. in the summer, the Betterpark Hintertux is THE place to be. The snowpark is open from April to December – Superpipe included!

The Afterparty at the Kleine Tenne in Lanersbach topped off the Big Final of the Quiksilver Wir Schanzen 2010. The winners and the successful ending of the tour were celebrated adequately to the dance music of the Drunken Masters.

All in all it was an absolutely felicitous and worthy final of the Quiksilver Wir Schanzen 2010. A big “Thank You!” goes to the sponsors, to the Hintertux Glacier and the Tux-Finkenberg Tourism, to the crew and of course to all the motivated riders of all tour stops, without you the Wir Schanzen would not exist.
See you next season!

Oh and by the way – as always there is a cool video made by RebelTV for those who could not come to the Hintertux Glacier. All those who want to upload their own movies and take part the video contest can do so until midnight May 02nd on www.rebel.tv and cream off awesome prizes. Who does not want to win IPods, Quiksilver Stuff or even Allgäu-Gletschercards?
