WSF Going 10

After a successfull General Assembly in Stockholm, the World Snowboard Federation (WSF) is now ready to enter its 10th season. What WSF will do for its 10 anniversary will not be different from what WSF did in the last decade: work to further develop the sport of snowboarding at all levels.

The main projects developed by WSF and it’s 38 member National Snowboard Associations (NSAs) in the last seasons included:

– World Rookie Tour
– Para-Snowboarding Program
– World Snowboard Day in association with EuroSIMA
– Shaper Education
– Grassroots Competition Programs at national level (1-2-3 stars events) in association with the TTR World Tour.

To celebrate it’s 10th season, and in addition to the previous consolidated programs, WSF will introduce a handful of new projects:
– Banked Slalom World Tour
– Addition of Halfpipe events in the World Rookie Tour
– International Judge education (in cooperation with TTR)
– Oslo 2012 World Snowboarding Championships (in cooperation with The Arctic Challenge, The Norwegian Snowboard Federation, Oslo Vinterpark and TTR)

For those who could not attend the last WSF and TTR General Assembly in Stockholm and want to know more about past report and future program, a detailed report is available here to download. The report include the WSF General Assembly Minutes, annual reports, presentations, stats and much more.

WSC Qualifications Updates May 2011

It’s the end of the Northern Hemisphere winter season, and before we turn heads to the south, lets recap the qualifications to the World Snowboarding Championships and check the latest update of the official WSF document!

It has only been on for a few months, but already 24 riders from 10 nations are qualified some by winning TTR 6 star events, some by winning national championships and other by national quota from their WSF federation. The rooster is a great mix of established superstars like Peetu Piiroien, Mark McMorris, Jamie Anderson, Kazu Kokubo and Eric Willet, and upcoming talents for all over the world. Not to forget the winner of the WSF Rookie Finals: Emil André Ulsletten.

The global reach of snowboarding is truly documented this early in the qualification process. The riders come from USA, Japan, Russia, South Korea, Finland, Norway, Great Britan, Canada, Czech Republic and Italy. When the qualification is done, 240 riders from 30 countries will be battling out for snowboarding’s most prestigious titles in Oslo, February 2012. This is a powerful demonstration of snowboarding’s global reach, and the winners will be true world champions.

Chas Guldemond got already his ticket winning the Oakley Arctic Challenge 2011

As a reminder, there are 5 ways to qualify: By winning TTR 6 star events, by being TTR top 50 men or Top 30 women after Burton European Open 2012, by receiving a wildcard, by national quota and by being TTR World Tour Champion the last three seasons. All participants must be among TTR Top 500 men and Top 250 Women by the end of Burton European Open 2012. It’s a fair and open rider entry protocol with equal opportunities for all. The wild card portion is under 5% of the starting field.

TTR has created a 52 weeks rollover discipline ranking starting and ending with European Open, that serves as the main qualification tool. It is published both at the TTR website and on www.wsc2012.com/riders . Here you will see the riders that currently have made the cut marked in red. The challengers marked in grey. As the TTR ranking is becoming more and more relevant, it will be a qualification drama peaking at the Burton European Open 2012. Compared to previous years, it now requires solid results to make it into TTR top 50. Yale Cousino, currently holding the 50th position on the slopestyle rank, has only posted 4, 5 and 6 star results. Number 30 on that same ranking, Sven Thorgren, has a 8th place in the 6 star Burton European Open as one of his results.

The ongoing qualification will be a great sports drama, and we expect it will increase rider interest for all upcoming events – and not only 6 star events. Doing good in 5 star events as the New Zealand Open will be crucial for determine your ranking position. All events up till the European Open will count, so don’t miss out on your opportunity to become the true champion of snowboarding!

Ulsletten and Rusin take the top honours at the 4Star Protest World Rookie Fina

Ischgl, Austria – April 12, 2011: Ischgl, Austria and its impressive park setup played host to the 4Star Protest World Rookie Finals on Saturday April 9th, 2011. As the final stop of the World Rookie Tour, the event had attracted the crème de la crème of rookies and groms. Around sixty competitors of age 18-years old and younger enjoyed a week of springtime park shredding, as well as, side events such as avalanche training. The highlight of the event were the finals on Saturday, which showcased exceptional riding where Emil Andre Ulsletten (NOR) and Katarzyna Rusin (POL) were crowned the 2010/11 WSF World Rookie Champions. The winners took home more prizes than they could carry along with 500 Swatch TTR Ranking points.

The Future Stars of Snowboarding
The World Rookie Tour has been harnessing young snowboarding talent all season long for many years now with each of the tour stops around the world offering wild cards to go to the final. The philosophy of the event is to give the future stars the opportunity to shine and help their progression by offering wild cards to bigger events and opportunities such as photo and film shoots with pros. The final event setup in Ischgl park was worthy of admiration, which consisted of four sets of massive step-up kickers and a jib/rail section. The sunny day and great riding attracted a big crowd of sunscreen-drenched spectators to support the competition. Winds came into play in the afternoon, which slowed down the riders and caused some nasty slams, but the level of riding remained impressive throughout the day.

Emil Andre Ulsletten from Norway was miles ahead of the pack already in qualifications and he was able to keep up his top notch riding in the two run finals grabbing the coveted rookie title. Among many of the prizes, he also earned himself a wild card to compete at the TTR/WSF World Snowboarding Championships in Oslo 2012. Emil’s winning run included a huge frontside 1080 and a Cab 900 and caught the eye of the judges with his fierce riding and styled tricks. At the prize giving, he was stoked saying; “I feel super good, it has been really fun here in Ischgl. The park was fun, weather nice and we had good riders. I’m in the TTR Top 30 right now and at the start of the season I was in 300 or something, so I have taken a big step this year and maybe bigger next year, I hope. This summer I head down to New Zealand with the Norwegian team and compete at the New Zealand Open.” Emil now sits in TTR World No. 29, which has set him in a great position for starting off next season in New Zealand in August. Among the top 10 finishers at the World Rookie Fest, six were Norwegians, including third place, Haavard Bergheim and a fellow Scandinavian, Sweden’s Sven Thorgren, in second place.

Katarzyna Rusin from Poland was able to defend her World Rookie Champ Title from last year. Katarzyna moves up into the TTR World No. 20 spot with her win and is one of the up and coming female riders in Europe who is also planning to head below the equator to start her season early. She said, “It was a great event like every year, its good to see that the level of riding is rising year by year. Next I will head to the European glaciers for some training and then go down with the Polish national team to New Zealand for the New Zealand Open and the Billabong Bro Down.” Finishing behind Katarzyna was Italian rookie, Valentina Barengo, in second place and Caroline Höckel from Switzerland in third.

In addition, the groms category, which featured riders born in 1996 or later, showcased some promising young shredders. Fridtjof Saether Tischendorf from Norway and Katerina Vojackova from Czech Republic took the victores both shredding the big kicker line of the snow park.

Ulsletten and Rusin are the WSF World Rookie Champions 2011

The 4Star Protest World Rookie Finals are finally concluded and Emil Andre Ulsletten from Norway and Katarzyina Rusin from Polland conquered the World Rookie Champions titles 2011 in Ischgl, Austria. Among the many prizes awarded, there was also an additional ticket to Oslo 2012 World Snowboard Championships for the male rookie champion.

Emil Andre Ulsletten (NOR)

In a slopestyle consisting of 4 table tops and a big jib area, all the riders showcased an high level of snowboarding for the end of season Protest World Rookie Finals 2011. Also, in the tradition of the World Rookie Tour, the event was not only a competition but included many other activities in the 5 days program: avalanche clinics by Pieps, art workshops with “special” people by We.Art, shredding with snowboard legends from USA (Mike Ranquet, Terry Kidwell and Bob Klein), video premiere about the History of Snowboarding, and a presentation of Oslo 2012 World Snowboard Championships and W.A.S (We Are Snowboarding) by Henning Anderson, CEO of The Arctic Challenge.

The male winner of the event and new WSF World Rookie Champion 2011 is the norwegian rising star Emil Andre Ulsletten, who impressed the jury with frontside 1080, cab 900 and tons of style on the rails. Sven Thorgren from Sweden and Haaverd Bergheim from Norway completed the male rookie podium: all of them won a freeride trip to Chile with international pros to join the South America Rookie Fest 2011 in Valle Nevado.

In the girls rookie category, Katarzyna Rusin from Polland conquered her second World Rookie Champion title and moved in the position 20 of the TTR World Pro Rank. Valentina Barengo from Italy got second and Caroline Hockel from Switzerland third.

Katerina Vojackova (Czech Republic)

Time to crown the WSF World Rookie Champion

Ischgl, Austria – April 4, 2011: The young-guns all over Europe are waxing up their boards and beginning their travels to Ischgl, Austria next week for the 4Star Protest World Rookie Finals. The future stars of snowboarding have had the opportunity to compete all year at the many World Rookie Tour stops found all over the globe, from Chile to Romania, which are 1Star to 3Star slopestyle events and each have offered wild cards for the finals. The World Rookie Fest culminates with male and female WSF World Rookie Champions being crowned at the end of the weekend. The action starts on the 6th of April and runs till the 10th of April 2011, at the Xperia snowpark. Following the footsteps of some of the world’s best snowboarders like current TTR Tour Champion Peetu Piiroinen (FIN), who took the World Rookie Champ title early in his career in 2004, the young hopefuls will compete in “groms” and “rookies” categories for some amazing prizes and up to 500 Swatch TTR World Ranking points.

Following the Footsteps of many Snowboard Stars
The World Rookie Tour is known as a place where the future snowboard stars test the waters and have the opportunity and encouragement to make a debut into the world of competitive snowboarding. Many top level snowboarders of today including Peetu Piiroinen, Christian Haller (SUI), Gjermund Braaten (NOR) and Roope Tonteri (FIN) have all been there and the WRF has been a stepping stone for these riders becoming professional snowboarders. This event does not only award the riders with TTR points and the glory that comes with the World Rookie Champ Title, but also several other prizes will be handed out, such as a ticket to the 6Star Billabong Air & Style Innsbruck rookie challenge, as well as, an opportunity to participate in an Onboard or Cooler photo shoot, or go filming with the Pirate Productions crew, along with some of the worlds best riders. The riders will take on the huge park setup that includes several 14-18 meter kickers, a hip and a selection of fun jib features.

Emil Andre Ulsletten from Norway took the victory in the 3Star Livigno Rookie Fest and earned himself a wild card to compete in the World Rookie Finals. Emil currently sits in TTR World No. 33, which is an impressive feat for the 17-year old rider. He went on to take 6th place at the 6Star Burton European Open slopestyle this January and has also competed at the 6Star Oakley Arctic Challenge. He has quickly gathered momentum on the TTR Tour and is one of the rookies to keep an eye out for. Other up and coming stars include Teemu Lamber (FIN), Hannes Handle (AUT), Lewis Courtier-Jones (GBR) and Ischgl local Roland Tschoder (AUT) in the groms category. Also, Lucien Koch (SUI) who showed off his serious slopestyle riding skills in the 5Star Nescafé Champs Leysin in Switzerland and took the top honours, is set to compete and is a contender for the title.

On the girl’s side, World No. 22, Katarzyna Rusin (POL) will be one to watch out for. She took the World Rookie Champ Title last year and this year came second at the WRF in Livigno and third at the 4Star Horesefeathers Pleasure Jam. Also confirmed is Hungarian Anna Gyarmati, who currently sits in World No. 38, and this year took the first spot at the 3Star WRF in Livigno and 5th at the 3Star Rip Curl Sista Sessions. There will be a serious display of talent on offer next weekend, as these under 18-year old riders will take the center stage in Ischgl, Austria over the next week.

4Star TTR events in America
Once the 4Star Protest World Rookie Finals has been wrapped up, as well as, the 4Star Billabong Flaunt-It at Sierra-at-Tahoe, USA on April 9th, 2011 the TTR Tour heads to the 4Star USASA National Championships on April 2, 2011 to April 12, 2011 at Copper Mountain, Colorado. Petr Horak triumphed in Czech Snowboarding Cup

Pec Pod Snezkou (Czech Republic) – Petr Horak and Lucie Zabranska ruled Impromat 4×4 Czech Snowboard Cup. After summarization of points from all Impromat 4×4 events they are the overall winners of the series and therefore they will be the Czech Snowboarding Team representants for next year´s prestige World Snowboarding Championships 2012 in Oslo. In last race of the Impromat 4×4 series in Pec pod Snezkou last weekend however Tomas Tuzar was executing tricks with surgical preciseness and that´s why the last race of the series wasn´t won by the overall winner Petr Horak. Thanks to Tomas great ride without mistakes he is new Czech Snowboarding Champion for 2011. In ladies category Lucie Zabranska achieved clear victory and she won the Czech Snowboard Champion title. Rookies category was dominated by Michal Bisa, groms category by Tomas Cisar.

All riders had the chance to show their best at the biggest kicker we had this season in Czech snowboarding events,” says Jarda Bocek, manager of Impromat 4×4 Czech Snowboarding Cup, about the last event. “And all riders had a good reason to do so. After third race of the series (14 days ago in Jested snowpark) point difference among the riders was really tight.”

During the sunny Saturday in Pec pod Snezkou there were hundreds of visitors watching two stars TTR Czech Snowboarding Cup Finals. Tomas Tuzar (winner of third event) and Petr Horak (winner of first and second event) were struggling for each point during qualification and finals. At the end Tomas Tuzar was the one who could celebrate his victory in Final Race. He performed flawless combo of switch back 7 and cab 9. However not even the victory in Finals did not mean the overall victory for Tomas Tuzar. After summarization of points Petr Horak became overall winner of the series. He could celebrate not only qualification for WSC in Oslo 2012 but also winning the Seat Ibiza ST for 6 months usage. “What I want for the next season is practice some more tricks such as cab double 9, 10, frontside double 10,” says Petr and ads: “I want to focus some more on my technique because in world snowboarding events it´s all about preciseness. You just touch the ground during landing and that´s it for you – even the best trick is rated as an average one.”

In ladies duel – Katerina Vojackova vs. Lucie Zabranska – there was a clearer situation. Lucie Zabranska won the Final event plus first and third race and outcome of overall counting of points was clear from the beggining. Lucie reached for Czech Snowboarding Championship title and she is qualified for the WSC 2012 in Oslo as the overall winner of the Impromat 4×4 series.
