2016 World Rookie Fest kicks off in Livigno, biggest than ever

The Black Yeti won the war against the lack of snow and welcomed 155 enthusiastic young riders from all over the world in Livigno for the 2016 World Rookie Fest. Despite the poor snow conditions, the Mottolino shapers crew spent night and day to create the best possible slopestyle course for the rookies and the Mottolino Snowpark is now ready for incredible freestyle actions.

With 155 registered riders, the 2016 World Rookie Fest is the biggest event of the World Rookie Tour ever, and the largest only youth freestyle snowboard competition ever organized in the history of World Snowboard Federation and TTR World Snowboard Tour.

After 11 years, it is always great to welcome in Livigno all these rookies and groms from all over the World” stated Marco Sampaoli, event organizer and WSF Vice-President. “Every year the event grows and with 155 riders from 18 different countries we are really proud to host the largest youth snowboard event ever organized”.

The event started with a training day and a great opening ceremony, with the video première of the 2015 Rookie Trip to Chile, a movie filmed in South America with the best riders from last season World Rookie Tour 2015. Immediately after the welcome party took place in the event headquarter at Plaza Pacheda.

2016 Oslo Rookie Fest is Coming Up

Following last year’s success, the Black Yeti will again stop by in the world winter capital for the 2016 Oslo Rookie Fest. This time, the Norway crew is stepping it up: The World Rookie Tour stop will go down at the same dates and place as the X Games Oslo – from 26th to 28th of February 2016 at the Oslo Vinterpark. Being able to watch the pros, all rookies will get free tickets to the X Games Oslo.

Oslo Rookie Fest 2016 FLYER

But that’s not all: besides participating in a slopestyle contest, the rookies are able to try out many amazing winter sport activities at the Oslo Winter Festival, owned and run by SAHR, which are the same folks as behind The Arctic Challenge, World Champs and X Games Oslo.

This winter, we combine both grass roots and world class sports by staging the X Games Oslo and Oslo Winter Festival. Besides watching spectacular performance at the X Games, everyone is invited to join in what Norwegians love: hanging in the snow and being active! The Oslo Rookie Fest is somewhere in between the grass roots activities and a top-level competition. The young and talented Rookie riders will make a solid bridge between newcomers and established pros“, says Henning Andersen, CEO of SAHR.

The slopestyle contest will be staged as national level competition as part of the World Snowboard Tour. The organizers are happy to host the event in the home country of the reigning World Rookie Champion Mons Røisland. The Norwegian stop is of big contribution for the World Rookie Tour in which many Scandinavian riders take part every year.

Our ambition is to create the dream weekend for the rookies, to come to the world winter capital, learn new tricks and progress the riding… get a taste of the international scene and go straight from competition to enjoy watching the best action sports athletes in the world at the X Games Oslo. We hope this can inspire many rookies to take the next step towards the professional world of snowboarders, as many other World Rookie Tour riders have done before,” comments Henning Andersen.

If you dream to become a professional snowboarder your future starts at the World Rookie Tour!

World Rookie Tour riders conquer the Suzuki Nine Knights 2015!

Three former World Rookie Tour riders crowded the Suzuki Nine Knights 2015 podium, held at Mottolino Snowpark in Livigno, Italy. Sven Thorgren, Tor Lundström and Seppe Smits won the first snowboard podium at the Castle and all of them come from WSF World Rookie Tour.

snb
Sven Thorgren by David Malacrida

Sven was a proper aficionado, as he started participating to World Rookie Tour very early, becoming World Grom Champion 2009 and World Rookie Champion 2012. Tor and Seppe took part several times to World Rookie Tour events: Seppe being at World Rookie Fest in Mottolino Snowpark, Livigno, already at the very first edition in 2006.

About Suzuki Nine Knights, the big news for 2015 was the snowboarding being included in the competition. The Castle was a concept created for media in 2008 and traditionally reserved to freeskiers, but this year the wind changed. This change is as epic as the the Castle itself, for the freestyle at Nine Knights is now complete.

For the fourth time at Mottolino, one of the largest and more comprehensive snowparks in Europe, the Nine Knights show is a proper challenge where 9 riders are invited to do some epic riding over a giant snow structure featuring lots of obstacles such as massive jumps and extreme jibbing. For 2015 a skate mini-ramp was also placed on the top of the Castle, creating such an awesome show!

WorldRookieFinal2009_priceGiving_GromMale_wrf09A young Sven Thorgren

Sven Thorgren stomped massive technical tricks with style, including a Cab 1260 Roastbeef Shifty Shifty, Backside Rodeo 540 Nosegrab, and even a Frontside Triple Cork 1440, a personal first. His fellow Swede, Tor Lundström, whose technical spinning and massive airs impressed the judges. Meanwhile, Seppe Smits rounded out the podium thanks to his smooth style and big spins, including a technical Backside Triple 1440 nose grab, a personal first.

TRICKS:

Sven Thorgren (SWE): Frontside Triple Cork 1440 (personal first), Cab 1260 Roastbeef Shifty Shifty, Backside Rodeo 540 Nosegrab

Tor Lundström (SWE): Backside Triple Cork 1440 Mute, Fronstide 1440 Mute (personal first day 4), Frontside 360 Stale

Seppe Smits (BEL): Backside Triple 1440 nose (personal first), Cab 1260 mute, Switch Backside 180 Method

Male Rookie Mons Røisland from Norway was killing it with a Switch Backside 1260 Mute and a Backside 900 Mute on the first two jumps, and a Cab Boardslide Underflip on the canon rail. He then hit the rails with a Tail 270 out and a Frontside 180 Switch Backside 360 Out.  Mons is taking home the title as WSF World Rookie Champion 2015 and a wild card for the Air & Style. With his needless first run, the 18-years-old outdid his team mate Fridtjof Tischendorf (NOR) and Swiss rider Dario Burch who filled the other podium spots in the male Rookie category.
