The sun over the perfectly shaped black line in the Oslo Vinterpark was giving it all – and so did 75 young snowboarders at the Oslo Rookie Fest 2016 from 26th to 28th of February. Enjoy the video of 2016 Oslo Rookie Fest!

Oslo Rookie Fest 2016 from MOON on Vimeo.

The Black Yeti’s first ever slopestyle stop in the Norwegian capital was highly awaited – Norway has been one of the most represented countries in the World Rookie Tour the past few years. During the NATIONAL level World Snowboard Tour contest on past Saturday, Rookies stemming from eight different countries proved their Black Yeti skills showcasing massive tricks. Norwegian rider Isak Ulstein left the greatest impression on slopestyle course. Best girl became Rookie Emmi Parkkisenniemi from Finland. Isak and Emmi brought home full-paid tickets for the pinnacle event of the World Rookie Tour – the 2016 Volkl World Rookie Finals in Ischgl, April 2016, snowboards from Sims and Never Summer and of course the famous Black Yeti trophies. Parallel to the Oslo Rookie Fest, the X Games Oslo were going down in the World Winter Capital. After practice and competition, the Rookies watched the best riders of the world competing in the X Games Oslo Finals in Halfpipe and Big Air.
Several athletes of the X Games Oslo have previously competed in the World Rookie Tour, which is providing the unique chance to help the next generation of pro snowboarders to experience their first dives into international contests and develop their competition skills. Besides exercising and watching high level riding, the Rookies enjoyed a snowskate session with the local Asker Snowboard and Freestyle Club pushing the Rookies skateskills on snow.

2016 Bulgarian Rookie Fest Cancelled

Unfortunately the Bulgarian resort of Pamporovo was forced to abandon the event, supposed to take place from March 15th to 17th, 2016. The luck of snow doens’t allow to build the slopestyle course: the Black Yeti is pretty angry about global warming!

Isak Ulstein And Emmi Parkkisenniemi Win The Oslo Rookie Rookie Fest 2016

The sun over the perfectly shaped black line in the Oslo Vinterpark was giving it all – and so did 75 young snowboarders at the Oslo Rookie Fest 2016 from 26th to 28th of February.

Ihne Pedersen 3

Huge park set-up

For this season, the Oslo Winterpark shaper crew has created a park set-up as it has never been witnessed in the ski resort before. An enlarged line in Wyller enables the  freestylers to push limits and for the Rookies to progress their trick skills. The newly designed rail line following the massive kickers will set the scene for creative and stunning runs during the contest.

Oslo Vinterpark

Action sport on snow all weekend long
After training and competition, the Rookies can experience the X Games Oslo feeling by watching the pros during their world class competition AND by joining the “Next X” activity, one of the various activities of the Oslo Winter Festival. The whole Oslo Vinterpark will turn into an action sport playground which the Rookies can enjoy all weekend long. Snowskate sessions are also on the agenda as well as an action photo workshop at the rail park (and many more activities)

The sportive side of the event include the Slopestyle Contest, to get qualified for the 2016 Volkl World Rookie Finals in Ischgl. Unfortunately this year the luck of snow didn’t allow to build the halfpipe, but in addition will happen a Night Rail Jam in “Cash for Trick” format to awards the best street riders!

Moreover many side activities will fulfill the event program: film premiere about the 2015 World Rookie Tour, Night Photo Shooting, and a touristic trip to Trento to visit the old town, “Buonconsiglio” castle and enjoy some shopping. Typical Trentino food, nice hotel with swimming pool, night walk in the woods, the “Crazy Bob Race” and a great final party on Saturday night will ensure great time as well.

2016 Transilvania Rookie Fest cancelled due to lack of snow

Unfortunately the Transylvanian resort of Arena Platos was forced to abandon the event, supposed to take place from February 5th to 7th, 2016. The luck of snow doens’t allow to build the slopestyle course: the Black Yeti is pretty angry about global warming!

Netherlands is the Best Team of the 2016 World Rookie Fest

World Rookie Fest, the most famous youth snowboard freestyle event in the world, took place in Livigno, Italy, at Mottolino Fun Mountain, with 155 riders from 18 different nations. The largest edition ever was a big success despite the unstable weather conditions, so that qualification day had to be cancelled due to heavy snow storm and strong wind.

However, for the final day the organizers could use a window of less wind and made contest with two runs for each rider in each category, and the international young snowboarders were able to push the competition at a high level.

Black Yeti proved once again that the future snowboard pro riders are just around the corner. After Norwegian team’s nine consecutive victories as Best Team, and the last year victory of the Swiss Team, another team wins, Netherlands, with two riders at the top of the Rookie Boys’ rank and a second place in the Grom Boys’ category.

Luck of snow and bad weather didn’t stop the event thanks to the energy of a great staff, motivated riders, an enthusiast crew and the shaper team of the Mottolino Snowpark.” stated Marco Sampaoli, WSF Vice President and event organizer “We are very happy for this successfully edition, the largest but also the most difficult edition ever”.

Dutch young gun Erik Bastiaansen took the first place in the Rookie category with a solid run. He impressed the judges and scored 90.03 points in his second run with Cab10 indy on the jump and Cab180 to 50-50 3 out over the a-frame. Erik wins ahead of another dutch rider, Niek Van Der Velden, and the Australian “Party King” Tom Harveyson.

The high number of Groms was an impressive element: 55 of 155 participants were under 14, showing a powerful renewal among the new snowboarders. Best Grom of the 2016 World Rookie Fest was young Swiss rider Elias Rupp, wins with a stylish run: Switch Back7 mute to cab 180 in 50-50 back 180 out from the a-frame. Casper Wolf from Netherlands and Samuel Camenzind from Switzerland.

On the girls’ side, Finnish rider Henna Ikola left 15 other Rookie Girls behind her by landing a huge Backside540 indy on the big kicker to a stylish cab 180 to 50-50 on the box. In the rest of Scandinavian podium two Norwegians: Nora Frisvold and Hanne Eilertsen.

Tina Steffensen from Norway showcased a great performance as best Grom girl with a huge Backside360 tail on the big kicker to 50-50 out from the a-frame, ahead of Luan Salgueira from France and Emma Gennero from Italy.

Probably it was one of the most difficult competition I’ve directed ever. Due to bad weather for 4 days in a row we were forced to change the program more than one time, change course, but I never give up. The working team and Mottolino Snowpark were always ready to follow my reserve plan and in the end, we did it. Thanks to riders, coaches, parents to the patience, and a special thanks to my team” stated Gian Luca Zanetti, WRF Race Director.

All the riders competed for prestigious awards including three all-inclusive tickets for the 2016 Volkl World Rookie Finals in Ischgl and two for the 2016 Trentino Rookie Fest in Monte Bondone. All the athletes on the podium are qualified for the 2016 Volkl World Rookie Finals!

Black Yeti congratulates all the riders who showed great style, battling the slopestyle in such hard weather conditions.
