Young talents shine at the World Rookie Skateboard Finals at Mystic Skatepark

The World Rookie Skateboard Finals at Mystic Skatepark in Prague concluded with a spectacular showcase of young talent, high-energy tricks, and an incredible spirit of camaraderie. Over three days, top young skaters from more than 15 nations, including the USA, Cambodia, Puerto Rico, and even Australia, competed at the iconic venue, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible on four wheels.

The event kicked off on Friday with an exciting bowl contest, showcasing the skaters’ versatility and style on the transition terrain.

Men winners:
1. Adrian Moreno Salas (ESP)
2. Kingsten Kalawaia (USA)
3. Gabriele Fabi (ITA)

Women winners:
1. Teresa Havlikova (CZE)
2. Umay Demir (GER)
3. Lela Helfenstein (SUI)

The adrenaline continued to build on Saturday with the highly anticipated street finals, where riders delivered jaw-dropping tricks and technical prowess. The following days set a new benchmark, with Grom category champions claiming the highest overall scores of the entire contest, proving that the future of skateboarding is in great hands. Italy took home the most medals this year, showcasing the strength of their young riders.

Final results and awards

  • Grom Girls Champion: Laura Žáčková (CZE), from the Czech Republic, with the highest score among all female participants.
The title stayed at home, as the 14 years old Prague local girl Laura Zackova had the overall score amongst all the girls competing, an amazing 78.67 that she got on her first run, showing the public and her competitors that she was there for the first spot in the podium. She started getting speed and with an ollie over the pyramid, followed by a perfect frontside lip slide down the biggest square rail of the delta. Then she went to the biggest part of the park to execute an incredible frontside 50-50 down the big hubba, which put her right on the first part of the park to do a backside 50-50 on the curb, without losing speed and going to the other side to do a stylish backside lip slide, a trick that most of the girls don’t go for it. If it was not enough, she went for a frontside boardslide down the rail, then a boardslide on the steepest rail of the park and ended her flawless run with a mandatory heelflip on the flat ground.
Laura’s outstanding performance earned her several prestigious awards: the Red Bull Special Award for Best Girl Overall, an invitation to the next edition of the Mystic Sk8 Cup, and a Golden Ticket granting access to all the WRT Skateboard stops she wishes to attend in the upcoming season.
Second place: Unna Peltotalo (FIN) – Third place: Noor Crevels (NED)
  • Grom Boys Champion: Beau Brunclair (BEL), who achieved the highest overall score among all male skaters. If you love competition skateboarding, just remember this name: Beau Brunclair. The 15-year-old Belgium talent was the weekend’s MVS (Most Valuable Skater). His runs this contest were at Mystic Skate Cup level and he had the overall score among all the boys, earning him not only the top spot in the Groom Podium but also the Golden Red Bull Special Award for Best Boy Overall, participation in the Mystic Sk8 Cup, and a Golden Ticket to compete at all the WRT Skateboard stops of his choice next year. If he started with an 88.33 on the first one, on his last one, the third, he ended with a 9 Club, a 93.33. Why? Well, he started with a backside kickflip tailslide on the curb, a nollie big spin back lip top fakie, a huge Tre Flip over the delta, backside 270 lip slide down the big square rail of the delta, big spin front blunt on the square rail of the delta, the other way around, backside lip slide on the Jersey Barrier and the Cherrie over the top the cake, a backside nose blunt on the rail on the other side. The judges call that an almost perfect run and what everybody wants to see.
Beau’s achievements did not go unnoticed, securing him the Red Bull Special Award for Best Boy Overall, participation in the Mystic Sk8 Cup, and a Golden Ticket to compete at all the WRT Skateboard stops of his choice next year.
Second place: Adrian Moreno Salas (ESP) – Third place: Gabriele Meini (ITA)

  • Rookie Women Champion: Lina Sevcnikar (SLO), dominating her category with impressive style and technique. The 17-year-old blonde girl came from Maribor, Slovenia, to take the highest spot on the podium of the Rookie Women Category. Although she never completed any of the three one-minute runs she had for the final, she sealed the deal on her first run. Her talent, tricks and style were enough to beat the competition. On her best run, she started with a clean board slide on the first rail of the Mystic Skate Park, followed by a 270 in the hip. Then she got from speed from the quarter to execute a perfect front board slide on the square rail of the delta, right in the centre of the park. She returned to the park’s first section and tried to do a 50-50 up on the curb. She failed, but she got back on the run with a backside noseslide down the hubba. She ended a run with a nollie into the bank, a relaxed but well-executed trick that she used to say that she was quite happy with her 46.33 run.
Lina’s victory earned her a spot at the next edition of the Mystic Sk8 Cup, solidifying her status as one of the most promising female skaters in the scene.
Second place: Giorgia Meini (ITA) – Third place: Ines De Almeida Tamayo (POR)

Lina Sevcnikar – ph. Tomas Hraban
  • World Rookie Skateboard Champion: Simon Gerber (SUI), takes home the top spot and the 2024 World Rookie Champion title. He took not only the WRT Finals 2024 Rookie Men Cup but also invitations to both the Mystic Sk8 Cup and the prestigious Simple Session. Simon was the best of the 18 men who competed in this category, and he did it with a 77.33 on his second of three one-minute runs. He started on his run with a Frontside Feeble on the rail, on the first part of the park, a backside disaster on the quarter, a backside 270 lip slide on the square rail, Kick Flip Front board on the delta square rail, a huge backside 360 Indy flying over the delta, frontside blunt on the rail, kickflip over the Fire Hydrant and he did not pinch the hurricane on the steepest rail, or it would be a better score, and ended with a blunt kickflip out on the quarter. This is what you have to do if you want to win.
Simon’s prize includes invitations to the Mystic Sk8 Cup and the prestigious Simple Session, where he will compete against top pros and further develop his skills.
Second place: Gabriele Fabi (ITA) – Third place: Alexander Blazek (CZE)

Black Yeti “HE.ART ❤️ PROJECT”

Black Yeti started the inclusive project “He.Art ❤️” based on sports and artistic workshops. Last year, during the World Rookie Freeski Finals, under-18 athletes of the World Rookie Tour and people with frailty or disabilities created some unique artworks: hand-painted skateboards using different techniques, and with the support of street artists. This artistic workshop has been proposed again at the Italian stop of the World Rookie Tour Skateboard in Modena.

The purpose of the “He.Art ❤️Project” is to show how sport and art can be powerful vehicles of inclusion, emotional involvement and sociality, and how they can combine and give genuine and full real-life experiences, enhancing everyone’s peculiarities. In fact, Black Yeti and World Rookie Tour believe sport is not only competition but also a growth path for athletes, their families and anyone else involved in our events.

During both events, while the athletes competed in the contest, fragile boys and girls attended introductory courses in one of our favourite disciplines: snowboarding, freeskiing and skateboarding supervised by qualified and expert coaches.

Inaugural Event and Upcoming Workshops

On Sunday November 12th, the project was presented at Modena Skatepark with the involvement of a partner association specialized in frail people. For an entire day, the skatepark was transformed into a hotbed of creativity. In fact, all the presents had the opportunity to learn the art of screen printing and personally print the Black Yeti log on their t-shirts. They decorate wooden boards with Uniposca and “help” the writer Federico Bavieri (aka TrAsT_No1) to produce the new graffiti for the Modena Skateboard School.
Finally, Luca Canali screen-printed 20 brand new skateboard decks with the Black Yeti outline for the next He.Art ❤️Project artistic workshops in Modena, Livigno, Madonna di Campiglio and Forte dei Marmi.

World Rookie Skateboard Finals successfully completed

Mystic Sk8 Park, Štvanice Island, Prague, CZE, 07. Oct. 2023

Mystic Sk8 Park in Prague, Czech Republic, welcomed 80 young skaters from 20 nations from all over the world, with teams representing Europe, Asia, America, Oceania and, for the first time in WRT Sk8 Finals, Africa. After a season of qualifying events all around the countries, the 2023 World Rookie Skateboard Finals welcomed the energies and the positive vibes of tomorrow’s stars and offered all participants an immersive experience in the skateboard culture.

The event took place in a great international scenario: Mystic Skatepark is an iconic location on an island surrounded by river Vltava where the legendary Mystic Sk8 Cup started at the beginning of this century. The park is located in the middle of the beautiful city of Prague which, with its cultural and artistic attractions, offers riders and crew a unique travel and lifestyle experience.

Andres Martin Gramaglia Fusconi – 2023 World Rookie Champion

The skateboarders showcased an extremely high level of riding during a full day of qualification and finals and they competed for World Rookie Champions titles and tickets to world-class events such as Mystic Sk8 Cup and Simple Session.

In the Female category, British ripper Abbie Nicole Burns resulted the best in the comp and conquered the 2023 World Rookie Champion title. At only 14 years old, Abbie is the youngest WRT Skateboard Champion we ever had. Laura Zackova from the Czech Republic and Florence Ulrich Adcocks from Germany completed the female podium.

Girl Podium:first place Abbie Nicole Burns (GBR), second place Laura Zackova (CZE) and third place Florence Ulrich Adcocks (GER)

In the Grom Male division for under 14 years old riders, French rising star Axel Van Cuyck conquered the World Grom Champion Title, followed on the podium by Jesse Kloes (GER) and Mussie Michael (ERI).

Grom Podium: first place Axel Van Cuyck (FRA), second place Jesse Kloes (GER) and third place Mussie Michael (ERI)

In the top division of the event, the 15-19 years old rookies, we watched an amazing battle for the podium. With tons of “Italian Style” and very technical lines, Andres Martin Gramaglia Fusconi won the event and was crowned the 2023 World Rookie Champion. At only 0.3 points behind Rocco Mueller (SUI) got second place while the third position was conquered on his very last run by Gabriele Fabi from Rome, Italy.

Rookie Podium: first place Andres Martin Gramaglia Fusconi (ITA), second place Rocco Mueller (SUI) and third place Gabriele Fabi (ITA).

The competition was great but the World Rookie Skateboard Final was not only focused on the competitive side of skateboarding. In fact, the program also featured a lot of lifestyle activities to offer a unique experience to everybody: GummyLove “safe sex workshops”, social dinners, street sessions and an exclusive “Meet & Shred” session at Maxplace skatepark with local skateboard hero Maxim Habanec.

The focus is on the personal growth of individuals rather than on competition, an aspect often not considered in other activities of this type.
