2021 World Rookie Freeski Finals moves to Austria

Due to the covid emergency the 2021 World Rookie Tour Freeski Finals, originally scheduled in Seiser Alm, Italy, from March the 23rd until March the 27th, will change date and location and will move to one of our oldest partner ski resort: Kitzsteinhorn, Zell am See-Kaprun in Austria.

We tried hard to execute the 2021 WRT Freeski Finals in Seiser Alm, Italy, where the first edition happened back in 2019, but the extended covid emergency in Italy didn’t allow the most of the ski resort to open.” stated Marco Sampaoli from the WRT Organizing team. “We evaluated several options to make the event a reality in this difficult season and the best solution looks like to move it to Kitzsteinhorn, Austria, in conjunction with the 2021 WRT Snowboard Finals”.

The WRT organizing team is defining in this days all the technical details in order to combine the 2021 Freeski and the 2021 Snowboard finals in the same date and location. In-fact with some minor change in the program and general organization will be possible to host both events, approximately in the same original date from April the 11th until April the 16th.

All details, final dates and final programs, will be released in the next days, in the meanwhile continue to follow the Black Yeti on the web and stay safe.

Absolut Park Rookie Fest took place in Flauchauwinkl!

Flachauwinkl hosted the World Rookie Tour for the first time during the last week “Absolute Spring Battle”. Snowboarders from all over Europe took the opportunity to ride one of the best park setups in Europe and compete in a Big Air competition. Titles were awarded for the Absolut Park Rookie Fest for the youngsters, at the same time for the Austrian championship and FIS Europa Cup for all the riders.

Snowboard Big Air was on the program on March the 4th and the riders had a lot of fun with a perfectly groomed jump: as always, the Absolut Park crew ensured the best conditions! Over 60 participants from 19 nations showed technically demanding tricks with numerous front triples and many 1260s and 1440s. The judges confirmed the extremely high riding level.

It is impressive that some of the young riders also made it to the finals with the older competitors. The Absolute Rookie Fest title went to the rookie (born 2003 – 2005) Sam Vermaat (NED) with an excellent fourth place also in the European Cup, and Bianca Gisela (SUI) in the Grom category (2006-2007).

The Austrian champion in snowboard big air was Maximilian Deutinger, who came 11th in the Europa Cup ranking as the best Austrian. The Finnish Eveliina Taka and the Swiss Jonas Junker beamed from the podium as happy European Cup winners. Eveliina is no stranger to the World Rookie Tour events: “I grew up with the World Rookie Tour, I’m totally happy to win the European Cup here today.” Jonas Junker won the men category with backside and frontside triples and clearly got the victory. Behind him is the strong German parliamentary group with Noah Vicktor in second and Leon Vockensperger in third.

Of course, in cooperation with the ÖSV, a comprehensive Covid-19 security concept was implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of everyone involved. A big thank you goes to partners and sponsors who made the event possible, even in challenging times like these.

Hungary Rookie Fest – Report

In six days, the competitions of the national snowboard championship took place in two Hungarian venues. At the same time, Hungary Rookie Fest went down for the first time! Congrats!

Three years ago, we started a process to “bring home” all elements of the national championship from Murau, Austria, giving the entire home field a chance to get started. This year we have moved forward again, as we held three of the four races at home, and the fourth, the snowboard cross, was left behind only due to the lack of enough snow because we couldn’t build the track for it.
But with a little luck, we can still make up for that in March. Another important development is that this year all of our races was run with live time scoring, and it was possible to follow the development of the races online. There was a crowded field in all age groups, young people come in nicely and seniors remain loyal to the league and show the way to youth”- Balázs Bécsy, president of Hungarian Snowboard Federation.

The biggest advancement, however, is that the Store13 Snowboard Freestyle & Giant Slalom National Championship was already part of the world’s most significant international freestyle youth competition series, the World Rookie Tour. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, foreign entrants have not been able to start this year, but for the future, this is a serious recognition of the work of the association!
