Report from Cambodia Rookie Fest

The first ever South East Asian Rookie Fest is in the books! Over 100 people gathered at the Factory Skatepark in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, on August 28. Orchestrated by the Cambodian Skateboard Federation, the growing local skate scene worked hard to bring up this amazing event. The Black Yeti, who travelled all the way to this beautiful tropical country, came back very happy!

The format involved two runs of 60 seconds, followed by 5 best tricks attempts. An international panel of five judges (Colombia, Australia, Switzerland and Cambodia) considered the best run plus the three best tricks for the final ranking. Only male skaters have participated in this edition but the success of this first event will no doubt create some interest amongst the girls. Developing skateboard is the overall purpose of the national federation and is our mission too!

We’ve seen a good level of riding and can’t wait to host Cambodians at the finals! Here are the winners:

Podium Rookies

1/ Van Yintola
2/ Doung Chansovanrattanak
3/ Chou Chanvy

Podium Groms

1/ Ouch Phyayuth
2/ Khem Chansak
3/ Pech Kimlong

National press largely covered the contest and no less than three national TV channels have broadcasted detailed reportages on the event. Several DJs and local animations gave an extra dose of good vibes. The local fish soup was on the riders’ menu together with German dishes to further make the Cambodia Rookie Fest 2022 a delicious venture.

The organization is proud to have had the event endorsed by His Excellency Doung Meas Chamreun, Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Sports at the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports; His Excellency Tem Moeun, Deputy General Secretary of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia; and His Excellency Chich Karona, Vice-President of Youth, Local institutions and Public Relations at the Youth Federation of Cambodia.

Congratulations to all!

Judging is based on the skater’s performance compared to the performance of other competitors, not previous performances or abilities. Report and results Balkan Rookie Fest 2022

The second stop of the World Rookie Tour – Skateboarding 2022,  for athletes up to 19 years old, was held at the brand new skate park in the city of Stara Zagora, Bulgaria. The wonderful facility, which was officially opened a week ago, gave a perfect opportunity for all participants to uncover their full potential.

The competition was held in three categories – Girls under 19, Boys under 15 and Boys under 19, with total number of 30 participants.

The winner in the Girls category is Julia Plagenborg from the Netherlands who demonstrated an incredible skills and excellent control. For her efforts she was granted an all-inclusive ticket to the finals of the tour in Innsbruck, Austria.

Second place went to Elizabeth Mako from Romania, who will also be part of the finals in Innsbruck, thanks to her victory in the first stop of the tour at Baia Male, Romania.

Kristina Todorova from Skateboard Club Genex took the third place, and fourth place went deservedly to the young participant Gabriel Sorshilova – only 7 years old.

Boys under 15 was the most competitive group of all. The number one Patric Ilut from neighboring Romania, who showed enviable class, took the highest overall score in the whole competition and not to mention he is only 13 years old. He won the first stop of the tour in Romania as well, granting his all-inclusive ticket to the finals 2 week ago.

That sent the all-inclusive ticket for the World finals to Alberto Chakalov from Skateboard Club Five-High who finished second in both Boys Under 15 and Overall ranking. Jan Genev from Genex became third in this age group, with his clean and interesting run line.

The positives of such youth competitions were proven by the significant development accomplished in a year in the Boys category of under 18. The first place was won by Maxim Akramov from Genex with his complex tricks and well-measured risks. Deyan Petkov from Skate Club Burgas was second, and third became Maximilian Epping also from Skate Club Burgas.

All participants received gifts upon registration and the finalists in the individual groups walked away with many more prizes provided by the partners and sponsors of the event.

Madonna di Campiglio crowns the young freeski world champions

Madonna di Campiglio welcomed 60 young and fierce athletes from all over the world: Japan, Australia, Argentina, Holland, Switzerland, Norway, Austria, France, Germany, UK, United States, Italy, together to show their talent and earn the title of the new World Rookie Freeski Champion 2022. The context was spectacular, with an Ursus Snowpark perfect for the occasion.

The race set up built specifically for the slopestyle contest organized by the staff of the Black Yeti, the legendary mascot of the World Rookie Tour, included 3 tables with kickers of 15, 18 and 20 meters, while the set of rails gave the possibility to choose between different structures, then concluding the race on the final wall ride.

The race sanctioned the victory of the Norwegian ripper Leo Landroe in the Rookie category, followed by two Swiss: Fadri Rhyner and Gian Andri Bolinger. Leo won thanks to a run consisting of switch left 1080 tailgrab, switch regular double twelve safety grab, left triple 1440 mute grab, switchslide back 640 and switchslide front 270.

The female category saw the victory of the young Dutch Zoe Van Essen with a switch left 540 safety grab, right 360, left 720 safety grab, switchslide, left 1. Follow her, the Australian Daisy Thomas and the Swiss Anouk Andraska.

In the Grom category the Swiss Viktor Alexander Maksyagin got the better of the Austrian Andreas Penz with a run made up of switch left double 9 safety grab, right double 10 safety grab, left double 10 safety grab, switchslide front 4, left 1 front 2 out. The Swedish Theo Thoren follows in third position.

One of the main features of the World Rookie Tour events is the attention to the personal growth of the young participants, offering them a 360° life experience. Not only competition but also collateral activities and non-cash prizes; opportunities to enter the professional world. The winners, both male and female, will participate in the FIS World Cup 2023, the Red Bull Infinite Lines 2023 in Avoriaz, France, the Prime Park Sessions in Stubai, Austria, and the Absolute Spring Battle 2023 in Flachauwinkl, Austria.

The activities proposed by the 2022 edition of the World Rookie Freeski Finals were an afternoon dedicated to acrobatic training thanks to the support of the Freestyle Academy in Madonna di Campiglio and the appreciated permanent presence of the osteopath Marco Pandartico at the service of athletes, coaches and staff.
